Sports Briefs : Baseball 49ers Play Hawaii

Cal State Long Beach will take a 46-13 record into the West I region of the NCAA baseball playoffs Friday afternoon at Tucson. The 49ers, co-champions with Fresno State of the Big West Conference, will play Hawaii in the first round.

Ice Hockey Tournament

The fifth annual Norwalk Memorial Day Hockey Tournament will be held today through Monday at the Norwalk Ice Arena, 14100 S. Shoemaker Ave. The tournament is held by the Norwalk Condors youth hockey club. The Mite B Condors, composed of boys up to 9 years old, recently won the California Amateur Hockey Assn. championship by defeating Fresno, 4-1. The Condors had a 31-1-1 regular season record.

Prep Baseball Playoffs

Lakewood and Millikan won second-round 5-A Division games in the Southern Section baseball playoffs Tuesday..

Lakewood defeated Hawthorne, 14-4, and Millikan beat Culver City, 4-3. St. Paul was eliminated by Wilson of Hacienda Heights, 4-2.

In 4-A, Cerritos defeated Anaheim, 7-5.

Three area teams lost in 3-A: Artesia fell to Tustin, 3-2, La Serna was edged by Palmdale, 5-4, and Glenn lost to Saugus, 3-0.

In 2-A, Whittier Christian was eliminated by San Marino, 5-1.

Leffingwell Christian won a small-schools game, 8-1, over Valley Christian of Santa Maria, but Avalon lost to Cate of Carpinteria, 9-6.

In quarterfinal games Friday afternoon at 3:15, Lakewood will be host to Fontana, Millikan will play at Simi Valley, Cerritos will be host to Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks and Leffingwell Christian will be at Cate.

CIF Masters Track Meet

About 300 athletes will compete in the Southern Section masters track meet at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Cerritos College in Norwalk. Purpose of the meet is qualification for the state track and field championships June 2-3 at Cerritos College.

CSULB Cyclist Finishes 5th

Cal State Long Beach cyclist Randy Marrs finished fifth out of 175 competitors in a road race at the U.S. Collegiate Cycling Assn. championships last weekend in Colorado Springs. He led a 40-mile flat-course criterium when he crashed on the final lap.

Jordan Star in Shrine Game

Johnny Robinson of Jordan High School will play in the 38th annual Shrine All-Star Football Game July 29 at the Rose Bowl. Robinson was The Times’ South Coast Back of the Year last season.
