Titans Hess, Coombes Named All-Americans
Cal State Fullerton softball players Carey Hess and Missy Coombes were named Wednesday as first-team All-Americans by a panel of coaches.
The players, both juniors, earlier had been named first-team All-Big West Conference and All-West Regional.
Terry Carpenter of Edison High School, a freshman pitcher at Fresno State, also was selected a first-team All-American.
Hess, an outfielder from Loara High, led the Big West with a .409 batting average, which broke the school record of .408 set by Sue Lewis in 1981. Hess also set a school record with 52 runs scored, which also broke Lewis’ record of 47 set in 1981.
Hess led the Titans in hits (85), triples (three), slugging percentage (.486), on-base percentage (.466) and was nine for nine in stolen bases.
Coombes, a first baseman from Arcadia High, led Fullerton in runs batted in (29), doubles (14) and game-winning hits (eight). She was tied for the team lead in home runs (two) and also was nine for nine in stolen bases.
