Prep Pitcher’s Win Streak Ends at 53

Jon Peters, who set the national high school record of 51 consecutive victories last month, lost his first game as a scholastic pitcher Thursday night when West Orange-Stark no-hit his Brenham team, 3-0.

Peters, who is 53-1 in his career at Brenham, remained two short of the Texas record for career victories as West Orange-Stark evened the best-of-three Class 4A regional semifinal playoff series. Brenham won, 5-2, on Wednesday.

Brenham (27-2) has won an unprecedented three consecutive Class 4A titles.

The loss was the first in 12 decisions this season for Peters, who struck out eight.

Peters’ wild pitch scored Kevin Smith from third base in the second inning and he allowed two more runs in the fifth.

On April 28, Peters broke the record of 50 consecutive wins held by Timmy Moore of McColl, S.C. Moore set the record in 1977-80, but he didn’t know he had a national record until last year when Peters’ streak was publicized nationally.

Peters’ last defeat came when Brenham lost to Taiwan in the semifinals of the 1985 Little League World Series.

Peters had a 13-0 record as a freshman, 15-0 as a sophomore and 14-0 last year.

The Texas state high school record for total career victories is 55 by Duncanville’s Keith Creel from 1974-77.

The national high school record for career victories is 61 by Steve Streater, of Sylva Webster, N.C. from 1974-1977.
