College Roundup : CSUN Golfers Finish Third in Nationals

Scott Humphreys placed fourth overall to lead Cal State Northridge to a third-place finish in the NCAA Division II golf championships Friday at Lake View Country Club in Erie, Pa.

Humphreys, a senior, shot a 12-over-par 300 for 72 holes to tie for fourth place. Rick Southwick of Rollins (Fla.) and Kevin Selph of Valdosta (Ga.) State also tied for fourth.

Humphreys shot a 73 for the final 18 holes Friday to lead Northridge to a final-round 293--the low score of the day.

Columbus College, also from Georgia, shot a four-round 1,196 to win the title. CSUN shot 1,211 strokes over four rounds, five shots behind second-place Valdosta.

CSUN’s Tim Hogarth shot a 303 to tie for 10th and teammates Pat Boyd and Roger Metz each shot 309 to finish tied for 21st.

Roger Makemson (310) tied for 22nd place.

“I was happy finishing third because it was about what we expected,” Cal State Northridge Coach Jim Bracken said.

Brian Dixon of Columbus was the individual titlist.

Dixon, a junior, took the lead after the third round and fired a 73 Friday for a 72-hole score of six-over-par 294. Dixon edged Valdosta junior Todd Doohan, who shot 71 to finish at 296.

Charlie Whittington of Columbus was third at 297.

The top two players are eligible to compete in the NCAA Division I championships in Edmond, Okla.

TRACK AND FIELD

Freshman shotputter Steve Cannon of Cal Lutheran finished seventh with a throw of 51 feet, seven inches in the NAIA championships at Azusa Pacific.

The throw marked a personal record for Cannon.

Susan Bluhm of Cal Lutheran placed fourth in her 400-meter heat in 57.04 seconds to qualify for today’s finals. The other CLU competitors in Friday’s events--seven men in three events and four women in three events--failed to qualify for the finals.
