NAMES IN THE NEWS : 1st Lady Dedicates Bonn Redwood
First Lady Barbara Bush dedicated an 8-foot-wide crosscut slab from a 750-year-old California redwood tree today as a symbol of lasting friendship between the United States and West Germany.
A White House statement said the giant redwood from which the slab was cut had been “harvested for environmentally sound reasons” in northern California’s Six Rivers National Forest.
Mrs. Bush noted that the piece of redwood had lived long and traveled far to reach its new resting spot on a wind-swept knoll in Bonn’s Rheinaue Park.
