Oakland A’s shortstop Walt Weiss, the 1988 American League Rookie of the Year, underwent arthroscopic surgery early today to repair torn cartilage in his right knee, officials at Barton Memorial Hospital said.

Knee specialist Dr. Richard Steadman examined Weiss’ knee Thursday, one day after a magnetic resonance imaging test in San Francisco first revealed the tear. Steadman is chairman of medicine for the U.S. ski team and has worked with NFL players, including Dan Marino.

Weiss originally twisted the knee when he planted his foot to throw during a May 17 game against the Yankees. He appeared to be making some progress but tripped in his Boston hotel room Sunday.

Weiss was hitting .213 before his injury. He is expected to be sidelined about six weeks.
