Occupants of two pickup trucks opened fire on each other in a blazing gun battle Monday night near the Fashion Valley shopping center that ended with one man dead and police searching for suspects.

The unidentified victim, who had been in one of the trucks, was pronounced dead at Sharp Memorial Hospital with a chest wound. His name was not released, pending notification of his family.

Sgt. Timothy Smith said the shooting occurred about 7 p.m. as two groups of men in the trucks began shooting at each other as they drove south on Ulric Street, approaching Fashion Valley.

Police found bullet casings from a 9-millimeter pistol, a .22-caliber handgun and a .45-caliber weapon in the area, but no suspects were immediately taken into custody.

The truck with the wounded man in it stopped just north of Fashion Valley on Ulric. The other truck sped away. Paramedics were summoned, and the victim was taken by ambulance to the hospital.
