Area Roundup : Anaheim All-Stars Will Play at Glover Stadium Tonight

Some of the best high school players in Anaheim will meet tonight in an all-star game at Glover Stadium starting at 7. Admission is $2.

All-stars from Empire League champion Loara, Orange League champion Orange, and Empire League members Katella and Cypress will form one team coached by Rob Megill of Loara and Don Riyl of Cypress.

The team will be led by Loara pitcher and outfielder Kenny Williams, who was the player of the year in the Empire League. Loara pitcher Eric Smith, outfielder Jeremy Sherman of Katella, infielders John Barber of Anaheim and Jon Gardikis of Cypress also will play on the team.

The other team will be made up of all-stars from Southern Section 3-A and Garden Grove League champion Kennedy, and Orange League members Magnolia, Savanna and Western. Hack Mitchell of Western will coach the team.

Kennedy catcher Ernie Franco, Western shortstop Troy Babbitt, Magnolia infielder Roberto Camarillo and Savanna outfielder Bill Nicoloff are expected to play.

The Gordon’s Panthers of Cypress will play host to the ninth Cypress softball tournament starting today at Cypress Arnold Park, Cerritos High School, Cypress College and Oak Knoll Park.

The 23-team tournament will feature many of the top 18-and-under girls’ teams from the area, including the Bat Busters of Orange County, Gordon’s Panthers, the Ball Hawks of Van Nuys, the Blaze of Bakersfield and the Waves of Goleta.

The double-elimination tournament continues Saturday and Sunday. The championship game is on the main field of Cypress Arnold Park at 6:30 p.m.

Raiders quarterback Steve Beuerlein heads the list of celebrities who will compete in the fourth Notre Dame Club of Orange County benefit golf tournament June 19 at the Newport Beach Country Club.

A variety of prizes--including a 1989 Oldsmobile for a hole-in-one--will be offered.

Entry fee is $150 which includes green fees, carts, prizes, awards, lunch and a buffet dinner. Proceeds will benefit a Notre Dame scholarship fund for county students.

Charlotte Hornets forward Kurt Rambis will be the guest speaker at the Orange County All-Star tip-off dinner June 22 at the Irvine Marriott Hotel.

The dinner will honor the 30 boys and 30 girls scheduled to compete in the county all-star game June 25 in UC Irvine’s Bren Center.

Lakers guard Michael Cooper and former California Coach Pete Newell also will make appearances at the dinner. Tickets, priced at $26, can be reserved by calling Vern Vegso at 642-3075.
