A Cheer for Cheever and Race at Phoenix

How can Shav Glick say the U.S. Grand Prix at Phoenix was disappointing when Eddie Cheever drove such an exciting, spirited race?

Cheever is proud to be an American, considers Phoenix his home although he now lives in Rome, and he actually earned a spot on the winner’s podium in his hometown’s inaugural Grand Prix event.

In fact, since the McLaren-Hondas have been so superior, for so long, I consider Cheever’s third practically a second place.

I do feel that the U.S. Grand Prix belongs on a “real” track (like Watkins Glen or Road Atlanta) and not simply on some artificial slot car track that anyone with enough money comes up with.

It certainly was the nature of the track that contributed to the many DNFs (did not finish). It is a shame that certain drivers end up high in the rankings simply because so many better car-driver combinations dropped out.

But those that survived also managed to not hit the many immovable objects that define the track. You have to finish to win.
