The town council in Palm Beach, Fla., decided against putting surveillance cameras on the bridges into this posh island community after the police chief questioned whether they would help fight crime. “We can’t continue to build fortresses and barriers around ourselves,” Chief Joseph Terlizzese said before the council vote. “Next thing you know, we’ll be building machine-gun nests.” He also told the council that the cameras may not have sufficient resolution to identify drivers. Others recalled the negative publicity the town, where Donald Trump and the Kennedy clan have homes, received over a law requiring workers to carry identification cards.
