Brazil’s Schmidt Gets 45, but United States Wins, 99-96, to Advance to Title Game

Billy Owens scored 22 points, and Doug Smith added 21 to lead the United States to a 99-96 victory over a more experienced Brazilian team Friday night for a berth in the gold-medal game of the World Championships qualifying tourmanent.

Brazil led, 52-45, at halftime, by using a frustrating zone trap. But the United States adjusted, began penetrating and used its size in the second half.

Oscar Schmidt, Brazil’s outstanding shooter, scored a game-high 45 points, including nine three-point shots. But the U.S. defense prevented him from taking a final shot that could have tied the game.

The United States took a 97-93 lead with 1:40 left before Schmidt made a three-pointer. But Smith replied with a slam dunk.

Brazil got the ball with only 16 seconds left and tried to set up Schmidt for a three-point attempt, but he was double-teamed, and Marcel de Souza missed a desperation shot from the corner.
