Bora Bora Travel
Jerry Hulse’s excellent article on Bora Bora (May 14) brought back wonderful memories of a delightful visit to that magical, beautiful island and a stay at the Oa Oa Hotel. But Hulse was remiss in not mentioning a wonderful way to travel from Tahiti to Bora Bora: on the inter-island ferry Raromatai.
The ferry leaves twice a week from Papeete in the evening. In the morning it docks at the islands of Huahine, Raiatea and Tahaa, with an hour at each stop. It’s enough time to leave the ship and walk through the marketplaces. The comfortable, air-conditioned ship holds 500 passengers and costs from $15 (for sleeping on the deck) to $50 (for a two-person cabin). Approaching Bora Bora by ship is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Also, readers should know that food costs are very, very high. In the markets, prices are twice that of the United States. A hamburger at the posh Bora Bora Hotel is $15. Take money.
