Two people were arrested late Saturday after Santa Ana police officers happened upon two cars whose occupants were allegedly exchanging gunshots in an apparent gang-related battle.
One of those arrested was wounded in the shooting.
Investigators with the gang division of the Santa Ana Police Department had stopped at the intersection of Downie Place and Fairview Street in an unmarked car when they saw a Chevrolet Impala race past, with shots being fired at an unidentified vehicle.
Police caught up to the Impala and arrested two of its occupants: Pedro Luevano, 21, of Los Angeles, and his brother, Javier, 20, who had been shot in the arm and chest.
Police said they believe Javier Luevano was shot by people in the other vehicle, which eluded officers.
Javier Luevano was taken to an undisclosed hospital and was listed in stable condition. His brother was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and of shooting at an occupied vehicle.
Police said they expect to arrest Javier Luevano when his condition improves.
A remaining passenger, a 17-year-old girl from Garden Grove, was released to her parents.
