A Continental Airlines jet carrying 132 people came within 100 feet of a private plane Friday and had to take evasive action to avoid a collision near John Wayne Airport, officials said.
Continental Airlines Flight 176 had taken off from the airport and was bound for Denver when a Beach Bonanza BE36 apparently took a wrong turn shortly after also taking off and crossed the flight path of the jetliner, according to a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman.
The pilot of the Continental jet had to take an unexpected turn to avoid the smaller plane, company spokesman David Messing said.
The incident occurred at 3:06 p.m. about half a mile south of the airport.
There were no injuries, and the Continental plane continued on to Denver, where it landed safely.
