Salkeld to Sign With Seattle for $225,000
Roger Salkeld and the Seattle Mariners have agreed to a contract that includes a $225,000 signing bonus, the pitcher’s father said Tuesday.
“That’s what we wanted all along,” Bill Salkeld said. “We’re extremely happy about it.”
The Salkeld family will travel today to Seattle where Roger, a Saugus High pitcher who was selected third in last month’s amateur draft, will meet with team officials and undergo a physical. He is expected to sign today or Thursday.
Salkeld, a hard-throwing, 6-foot-5, 210-pound right-hander, will be immediately assigned to the Mariners’ Class-A affiliate in Bellingham, Wash.
The signing bonus, which does not include incentive bonuses totaling $7,500, is the largest awarded a Seattle draft pick, exceeding the $160,000 bonus that Ken Griffey Jr. received in 1987, Bill Salkeld said.
“We thought all along this was a real fair amount,” Bill Salkeld said. “And it was.”
Salkeld was 13-1 with an 0.57 earned-run average this season while leading Saugus to the Southern Section 3-A Division final.
