Four county teachers are among 52 from California chosen by the state Department of Education to attend a monthlong literature conference in Madrid.
The four are Maria Palacios and Lupe Alfaro, both of the Santa Ana Unified School District; Martha Martini of the Centralia City School District, and Virginia Brady of the Orange Unified School District.
The Department of Education is awarding $500 scholarships to some of the teachers, who will have to spend about $1,000 of their own money for the balance of the traveling expenses, according to the department.
Those wishing to attend the conference have to be bilingual in English and Spanish and have previously participated in bilingual training programs.
The conference--the Second Annual Summer Institute on Children’s Literature--will be conducted this month. The purpose is to promote the idea that “literature develops ethical, cultural and aesthetic values while enabling students to build a reservoir of knowledge of themselves and the world around them,” according to a department news release.
