THE SIDELINES : Braves’ Alvarez Out 3 More Weeks
Braves relief pitcher Jose Alvarez will miss three more weeks after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his right knee, team officials said.
Braves spokesman Jim Schultz said Dr. Joe Chandler performed the operation at Piedmont Hospital on Monday, repairing cartilage and cleaning out the area around the knee. Alvarez decided on surgery after experiencing pain while throwing on the sidelines over the weekend.
Alvarez, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list June 25, is 3-3 with two saves and a 2.86 earned run average in 30 games.
Pitcher Sergio Valdez, obtained from Montreal in the trade for Zane Smith, has taken Alvarez’s spot on the roster.
