Richard G. Adams, retired secretary and general counsel of the Times Mirror Co., whose tenure dated to the days when one or two attorneys could handle the needs of this newspaper, died Thursday at his home in Laguna Hills.

He was 85 and had retired in 1960, 30 years after joining The Times shortly after his graduation from law school at the University of Oklahoma.

Based on erroneous information from old company publications, Friday’s obituary of Richard G. Adams, former secretary and general counsel for the Times Mirror Co., said that he had joined the company in 1930, instead of 1931, and retired in 1960, instead of 1966. Also, he attended the University of Colorado and not the University of Oklahoma.

Adams, who was succeeded by Robert F. Erburu, now chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Times Mirror Co., once described his job as “keeping the company out of trouble.”

In his time he not only handled libel and tax matters for the newspaper but helped formulate benefits and health and welfare programs.

His survivors include his wife, Blanche, a son, Richard, a daughter, Jean Belt, four grandchildren and a twin brother, Theodore.

Services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Pacific View Chapel in Newport Beach.
