Pendleton Marines Mop Up After Fire

Marines at Camp Pendleton spent most of Friday mopping up the aftermath of a fire that burned about 2,000 acres before it was contained late Thursday night.

About 70 firefighters from Oceanside, Camp Pendleton, Carlsbad, Encinitas, Vista and Fallbrook battled the blaze that began at 11:56 a.m. Thursday on one of the base’s firing ranges. Tracer bullets fired on the range caused the blaze, Cpl. Lorna Shryock said.

Several firefighters were treated for smoke inhalation and eye irritation and one sustained a cut on his wrist, but no major injuries occurred, Shryock said.

The fire caused no damage to nearby structures or power and telephone lines. There was minor damage to some contractor equipment, including a pallet of PCB pipes, Shryock said.

Investigators are assessing the damage.
