Robert J. Bauer; Better Business Bureau Official

Robert J. Bauer, who joined the Los Angeles Better Business Bureau when it was in its infancy in 1930 and retired from the agency 37 years later, died July 4 in Laguna Niguel, his family announced this week. He was 89.

When he took over the bureau, Bauer recalled in a 1967 pre-retirement interview, the office had six employees to serve 137 members. When he left there were 35 employees, 3,000 members, an annual budget of $300,000 and branches in Orange County and the San Fernando Valley.

Bauer is survived by two daughters and three grandchildren.
