Duncan, Michals, Reznicek Advance in Trans-Miss

Rancho Santa Fe’s Pat Duncan and Vista’s Jerry Michals and Randy Reznicek won second- and third-round matches Friday in the Trans-Mississippi Men’s Amateur Golf Championships at the La Jolla Country Club.
Medalist Jack Spradlin of San Diego won his second-round match, 2-up over Irvine’s Jon Buchman, but was defeated, 1-up, in the third round by Craig Steinberg, the Southern California Amateur champion from Van Nuys.
Duncan, a three-time San Diego Amateur champion, defeated Bob Twaddell of Houston, 2 and 1, and Eddie Lyons of Shreveport, La., 6 and 5.
Michals defeated Ron Moore of Englewood, Colo., 3 and 1, and Randy Sonnier of Woodlands, Tex., 1-up. Reznicek defeated Jim Raines of San Antonio, Tex., 2-up, in the second round and Coe Power of Las Vegas, 2 and 1, in the third.
Oceanside’s Jim Myers lost to Ron Richard of Fort Smith, Ark., in 19 holes.
Duncan will face Richard, the 1987 champion, in today’s quarterfinals. Michals will take on Stephen McCraw of Victoria, Australia, and Reznicek will will go against 1984 champion John Pigg of Austin, Tex.
Today’s quarterfinals begin at 8:30 a.m. with the semifinals to follow in the afternoon. Sunday’s championship is at 8 a.m.
SYNCHRONIZED SWIMMING
The Sweetwater Dolphins are fifth in the team competition and a Dolphins’ trio team is ninth heading into today’s finals of the Junior National Outdoor Championships at the Allied Gardens pool.
In the team competition, the Dolphins scored 88.04 points. They trail the Santa Clara Aquamaids (93.56) and three others.
Tracy Egoscue, Kindahl Hunter and Brooke Hunter scored 83.800 points in the trio semifinals. Briarwood of Richmond, Va., leads with 86.720 points.
Thirteen-year-olds Emily Marsh, Amy McDaniel and Jolie Taylor of the Dolphins finished 13th in their first Junior Nationals. The top 10 qualify for the finals.
Today’s trio and team finals begin at 4:30 p.m. Sunday’s solo and duet finals are at 8:15 a.m.
