The jury deciding the fate of Spring Valley murderer David Lucas told the judge Tuesday it was deadlocked and could not reach a verdict as to whether Lucas should be executed or spend the rest of his life in prison.
San Diego Superior Court Judge Laura Hammes, however, told the jury to resume deliberations, which will continue today.
The jury sent a note to the judge after deliberating about five hours over Monday and Tuesday. The note said a unanimous decision was not possible, but it did not reveal the breakdown of the jury’s vote.
The same jury convicted Lucas, 34, of killing two women and a child and of trying to murder a Seattle woman.
