“Baja California: A Travel Survival Kit,” by Scott Wayne, details every region of that peninsula, with its beautiful coastline of beaches, bays, lagoons and imposing cliffs. Away from the sometimes harsh interior are many cities and towns that offer short, inexpensive escapes: shopping sprees, sumptuous meals and exotic drinks. The visitor can relax or explore with a dune buggy, snorkel, fish or celebrate a fiesta. The book has plenty of maps and details on places to stay or dine. The text and color photographs offer a blend of the Indian and Spanish cultures. Big spenders and those on a budget will find the same warm hospitality (Lonely Planet: $8.95).

Several chapters are specific for the overlander, expeditioner or budget traveler, while others fill you in on health and safety when crossing an international border. Almost every challenge of travel is well covered by 80 contributors considered experts in their fields. But the where-to-eat-or-stay information will have to be found somewhere else (Globe Pequot: $15.95).
