Tennis Roundup : Gilbert, Noah Advance to Third Round

Second-seeded Brad Gilbert rallied to win a third-set tie-breaker over MalaVai Washington, ranked No. 342 in the world, and fourth-seeded Yannick Noah outlasted Mark Kratzmann, 6-7 (7-4), 7-6 (8-6), 7-5, Wednesday to advance to the third round of a $297,000 tennis tournament at Washington.

Gilbert, who played in the United States-West Germany Davis Cup match last weekend, won, 1-6, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6).

Kratzmann double-faulted to lose a second-set tie-breaker against Noah, who then fought off a break point in the third set to gain his first victory since losing at the French Open in May.

Javier Frana of Argentina upset fifth-seeded Dan Goldie, 6-3, 6-4, and Chris Garner ousted eighth-seeded Robert Seguso, 6-4, 6-3.

Yugoslav Goran Prpic upset Olympic champion Miloslav Mecir of Czechoslovakia, 6-1, 6-3, in the second round of a Grand Prix tennis tournament at Stuttgart, West Germany.

The match between top-seeded Jakob Hlasek of Switzerland and West Germany’s Jens Woehrmann was halted because of darkness with Hlasek leading, 6-4, 4-6, 3-1.
