THE SIDELINES : Twins Didn’t Need Viola to Edge New York 5-4
Randy Bush’s two-run homer capped a three-run rally in the seventh inning and the Minnesota Twins beat the New York Yankees 5-4 today in their first game without Frank Viola.
The Twins sent the 1988 American League Cy Young winner to the New York Mets for five players late Monday night. Minnesota got Rick Aguilera and three young pitchers, plus a player to be named later.
Shane Rawley, 5-8, remained undefeated in five career decisions against his former team. He won for just the second time in 13 starts since May 13, a span that included four losses.
Jeff Reardon, the fourth Minnesota pitcher, worked the ninth inning for his first major-league save. Aguilera warmed up late in the game but was not called on.
Walt Terrell got hit hard again in his second start since being traded from San Diego for Mike Pagliarulo. Terrell, 0-1, gave up five runs on nine hits in 6 1-3 innings.
Don Mattingly homered, singled twice and drove in three runs for the Yankees. Kent Hrbek also homered for Minnesota.
