From Times staff and wire service reports

Firefighters were putting out hot spots this morning from an 80-acre brush fire that was contained earlier in Pico Canyon near Newhall, the Los Angeles County Fire Department said.

The fire was reported about 4 p.m. Tuesday in an area of rugged terrain off Pico Canyon Road and several miles west of the Golden State Freeway, authorities said.

The area was inaccessible to vehicles, and firefighters were airlifted to the scene by helicopters. Water-dropping helicopters were also used to douse the flames.
