A clogged sewer line Wednesday morning caused about 12,000 gallons of raw sewage to spill into the ocean off La Jolla, county officials said.

The spill began about 7:30 a.m., when grease clogged a 10-inch sewer line and caused a manhole in the 700 block of Sapphire Street to overflow, said Phyllis Chalmers, a county hazardous materials specialist.

The sewage flowed down La Jolla Boulevard to Loring Street and into two storm drains, Chalmers said. The sewage then emptied into the ocean at Tourmaline Surfing Park. The flow was stopped about 9:30 a.m., Chalmers said.

Seven signs warning of contamination were posted 100 feet on each side of where the storm drains empty into the ocean. The signs were to remain in place for 24 hours.
