Show’s Season Finished After He Has Back Surgery

Padre pitcher Eric Show, unwilling to have the uncertainty of a back problem hovering over him during the off-season, decided to have surgery Wednesday night.

The operation was performed by Dr. Roger Thorne at the Green Hospital of Scripps Clinic in La Jolla. Thorne repaired the fifth disk in the lumbar region of Show’s lower back; Show is expected to be hospitalized four to five days.

Show is expected to be able to exercise again in about six weeks and begin pitching during the off-season. Thorne said he believes Show will be fully recovered well before the start of spring training in 1990.

Show (8-6) was diagnosed as having a bulging disk during the spring and began experiencing problems in June. On July 1, he became the first Padre pitcher scratched from a start this season.
