Fewer Flights Arrive On Time in June

Severe weather on the East Coast in June caused major airlines to slip in the number of flights that arrived on time, the Transportation Department said.

In the monthly Air Travel Consumer Report, the department said Thursday that the 13 largest domestic carriers reported that 72.2% of their flights arrived on time in June, compared to 79.5% for May.

The department said East Coast weather was largely to blame. Delays caused by mechanical problems are not counted in the report.

The report showed a surge in complaints to the government about airlines, with 1,119 received in July, a 30% increase over June complaints.

The trend, however, continued to be a decline, with July complaints down 43% from the 1,969 filed for the same month last year.

The department keeps a file of consumer data on performance of specific flights, airlines and airports. Much of the information is made available through travel agents.
