For the second consecutive year, kicking (and kick-returning) proved decisive in the Hall of Champions prep all-star football game.

Andy Trakas of San Diego’s Patrick Henry High School made three of three field-goal attempts, and Eric Robinson of Oceanside’s El Camino returned a punt 83 yards for a touchdown as a San Diego County all-star team defeated a Los Angeles City Section all-star team, 24-9, before 5,125 fans Saturday night at Torrey Pines High School.

San Diego County has won three years in a row. Last year, Fallbrook’s Tim Walker kicked a 39-yard field goal with eight seconds remaining to give San Diego a 17-14 victory.

In the second half, the game turned into a sloppy affair marred by mistakes and penalties. Los Angeles avoided the possibility of being shut out by getting a safety in the third quarter. San Diego had a snap on a punt attempt sail into and out of the end zone.

Robinson, from Oceanside El Camino, provided some excitement with his 83-yard punt return midway through the fourth quarter.

Torrey Pines’ John Lynch scored on a four-yard keeper late in the fourth quarter to end the scoring for San Diego. The touchdown was set up by a fumbled punt by L.A.
