LOCAL : Bomb Scare at Reseda Center
Los Angeles police investigated a report of a possible bomb on the roof of a city Recreation and Parks family counseling center in Reseda this morning but found only a bag filled with batteries, authorities said.
A man in his 20s who was found on the roof of the one-story Family Service of Los Angeles Community Center in the 14700 block of Victory Boulevard was being questioned in connection with the incident. Police said they had not determined why he was there or whether he had placed the batteries there. The man’s name was not released.
Victory Boulevard was closed, and the 8 a.m. opening of the center, which provides a variety of financial and personal counseling programs, was delayed until about 10 a.m. while the incident was investigated.
Lt. Winthrop Taylor said police received a call about 7:30 a.m from a woman who reported that the center was an abortion clinic and that a man was seen climbing onto the roof. Fran Umanski, director of the center, said the city-operated center does not offer any programs involving abortion.
The Police Department’s bomb squad was called to the scene while road blocks were set up in the area.
