Redondo Beach sets aside a day for no work, all play.

There are trade shows for electronic equipment and trade shows for boats. There are even trade shows for wedding services.

So why not put on a show for recreation?

That’s just what the Redondo Beach Park and Recreation Department is doing on Saturday with its first free Recreation Day.

“We want to bolster community recognition of our recreation programs we’re very proud of,” said Mary S. Flynn, a city recreation supervisor. “We’re showcasing everything the department does.”

The event honors National Recreation Month, which Flynn says was actually in July. “But we’re celebrating it now,” she said. “Recreation is important in our lives.”

The all-day event at locales ranging from parks to the dock at King Harbor will allow visitors to sample classes including aerobics, karate and sailing, take tennis lessons, train their dogs, see a magic show and play basketball and volleyball, or shuffleboard and canasta.

Would-be comedians, singers, dancers and other performers may become local stars for a day in a talent show search, and a “Battle of the Bands” will pit six teen rock and roll bands against one another.

The largest number of events will be at Aviation Park, 1935 Manhattan Beach Blvd., where the youth talent show will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the auditorium and the adult show from 2 to 5 p.m. The band battle also will be waged there from 6 to 10 p.m.

Recreation class demonstrations and workshops will go on from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Aviation Park gym. Special attractions include sports events, a drill team, choir and drama performances and a petting zoo.

Dog training classes and demonstrations will take place from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., also at the gym. Advice to dog owners: Don’t feed your pet before attending, but do bring his favorite treats.

Recreational swimming will be offered from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at pools at Mira Costa High School, 701 S. Peck Ave. in Manhattan Beach and at Redondo Union High School, 631 Vincent Park. Water games and contests will also be held at the Redondo Union pool.

Starting at noon, Alta Vista Racquet Courts, 715 Julia St., will hold tennis lessons and free play in tennis and racquetball.

The Community Resource Center, 320 Knob Hill Ave., will hold a seniors dance from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. with refreshments, door prizes and music by the Art Cummings Band. Shuffleboard and canasta will be played from noon to 3 p.m. at Veterans Park Senior Center, 309 Esplanade.

A magic show will be presented at 2 p.m. in the park band shell.

Instructors will talk about sailing and take people on boat rides starting at 10 a.m. at the Harbormaster’s Dock at King Harbor.

Because of limited space, advance sign-ups are being taken for some activities, including tennis lessons, boat rides and some classes at the Aviation Park gym. Information is available by calling 318-0610.

Flynn said about 100 city staffers and instructors are putting on the recreation program, which is expected to become an annual event.

“This is for everybody who has ever thought about taking a class and wondered what it entails,” said Nica Lee, another recreation supervisor.

And it’s not just going and picking up a flyer, she said: “You can actually take a free class.”
