Chris Evert has decided to take part in a record 19th U.S. Open championship, the Women’s International Tennis Assn. announced today.

Evert, who has not played since she lost to Steffi Graf in the semifinals at Wimbledon on July 6, will also take part in the Canadian Open next week to prepare for the U.S. Open, which begins Aug. 28 in New York, the association said.

Evert’s participation will set a record for women in the tournament, which she has won six times. She shares the mark with Pam Teeguarden, who also played in 18 Opens.

Her tennis career has been in doubt after a series of disappointing performances this year, with Evert suggesting that she might retire.
