The Houston Rockets, trying to strengthen their back court, today signed former first-round draft pick John Lucas to a two-year contract.

Lucas, starting his 14th season in the NBA, was the Rockets’ first-round draft pick in 1976 after his collegiate career at Maryland. He ranks 10th in NBA career assists.

Lucas was waived by the Rockets after he failed a drug test early in the 1984-85 season. He returned for the 1986 season but again was waived in March, 1986.

Lucas was sent to Golden State in September, 1978, as compensation for free agent Rick Berry. He played three seasons at Golden State, two years at Washington and one year at San Antonio before returning to the Rockets. After leaving the Rockets for the third time in 1986, Lucas spent two seasons at Milwaukee and last season played with the Seattle Supersonics, averaging four points and four assists per game.
