A shoot-out in a residential area of Santa Ana left two innocent bystanders wounded, one seriously, police said Thursday.

Geronimo Mendoza Sanchez, 31, and Jose Abigil Barragon, 33, were standing in the front yard of Sanchez’s home at 7:35 p.m. Wednesday when gang members in a passing car opened fire on members of a rival gang in the 500 block of South Spruce Street, police spokeswoman Maureen Thomas said.

The other gang members returned fire, Thomas said. Sanchez and Barragon “were caught in the middle,” she said. “The two gangs were shooting back and forth.”

Sanchez was hit in the leg by a stray bullet and Barragon was shot once in the head, Thomas said. She said they were taken to United Western Medical Center-Santa Ana.

The hospital listed Barragon in serious but stable condition Thursday night. Sanchez had been treated and released.
