Elderly and disabled California homeowners and renters have only 11 days to file for their annual homeowner or renter assistance with the state Franchise Tax Board. To qualify, claimants must be at least 62 years old, or blind or disabled as of Dec. 31, 1988, and have $13,200 or less in total household income in 1988. The final filing date is Aug. 31. Homeowners can receive from 4% to 96% of the property tax they paid based on the first $34,000 assessed value of their home. Renters can receive assistance ranging from $10 to $240. The amount that claimants receive is based upon their income. This year an estimated 177,000 renters and 46,000 homeowners throughout California will receive nearly $23 million through this program, averaging $89 per homeowner and $106 per renter.
