Reaves, Rypien Lead Redskins Past Winless Dolphins

Willard Reaves scored two touchdowns and Mark Rypien completed 13 of 16 passes in the first half as the Washington Redskins kept the Miami Dolphins winless in the National Football League’s exhibition season with a 35-21 victory Friday night.

Rypien, coming off a lackluster three-for-14 performance against the Minnesota Vikings, directed three scoring drives to help Washington take a 21-7 lead at halftime.

A 13-yard touchdown pass from Cliff Stoudt to Deval Glover and J.B. Brown’s six-yard run with a blocked punt enabled the Dolphins to cut the gap to 28-21 with 4:48 left in the game. But the Redskins’ Joe Howard clinched the win when he returned the ensuing kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown.

Miami, which played quarterback Dan Marino only in the first half, is 0-3. Marino completed 11 of 20 passes for 126 yards and one touchdown.

The Redskins (3-1) drove 75 yards for a touchdown on their first possession. Gerald Riggs accounted for 43 yards in seven carries, the final a nine-yard touchdown run.

Riggs sat out the rest of the game but his replacement, Jamie Morris, enhanced his chances of making the team by rushing for 69 yards in 10 carries.

Morris gained 32 yards in an 80-yard drive that gave Washington a 14-0 lead with 8:23 left in the second quarter.

The 13-play drive was capped by Reaves’ two-yard run.
