THE SIDELINES : 3 Gridders End Contract Holdouts

Wide receiver Mike Quick today signed three one-year contracts with the Philadelphia Eagles, ending a holdout just in time for one game of preseason football.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed at a press conference this morning. He previously had a three-year contract worth $700,000 a year.

Quick, a five-time Pro Bowl selection who missed the first four preseason games, will be among the highest-paid wide receivers in the NFL, Eagles President Harry Gamble said.

Wide receiver Al Toon, the leading pass-catcher in the NFL last season, has ended his holdout and signed a series of three one-year contracts with the New York Jets, the club announced today.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

Toon, the Jets’ leading receiver each of the last three years, topped the NFL in receptions in 1988 with 93, for 1,067 yards and five touchdowns. He also was voted to the Pro Bowl for the third straight time.

Anthony Carter, the Minnesota Vikings’ Pro Bowl receiver, arrived in training camp this morning, ending a 28-day holdout.

Carter has said he wants to extend his contract to include a big raise from the $400,000 he is to earn this year. He wants about $1 million annually, but General Manager Mike Lynn has steadfastly said he would not negotiate with Carter or any other signed player who was not in camp.
