Roundup : University Perfect in City Limits

The University High School girls’ tennis team defeated visiting Irvine, 12-6, on Thursday to sweep matches against Irvine schools this week.

University (4-0) defeated the other Irvine high school, Woodbridge, 13-1, Monday.

Sophomore Jannette Fylpaa, who was 50-4 last year, improved to 12-0 this year by sweeping her sets, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0.

Irvine is 1-3.

In other nonleague tennis:

Edison 14, Foothill 4--Kristen Fleming won, 6-3, 6-2, 6-0, and Kim Willauer swept her sets, 6-3, 6-1, 6-0, for host Edison (2-1).

Esperanza 16, La Quinta 2--Kassi Lundahl swept her sets, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0 to lead visiting Esperanza (2-0).

Los Alamitos 11, Huntington Beach 7--Jennifer Shoudt swept her sets, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, and Laura Brun also swept, 6-2, 6-1, 6-1, to lead visiting Los Alamitos (1-0) in season opener for both teams.

Marina 10, Newport Harbor 8--Tracy Crisell swept, 6-0, 6-1, 6-0, to lead host Marina (2-1) in singles. Marina’s No. 3 doubles team of Frances Chao and Brenda Madsen swept 6-3, 6-3, 6-3, to break the 8-8 tie with Newport Harbor (0-3).

Katella 11, Canyon 7--Katella’s three doubles teams swept at Canyon. Alisha Michaels and Janet Jo won, 6-2, 6-0, 6-0, Kelly Wang and Danielle Drenna won, 6-4, 6-3, 6-0, and Alicia Enriquez and Teresa Ho won, 6-2, 7-6, 6-0, for Katella (4-1).

Corona del Mar 13, Fountain Valley 5--Keri Phebus won 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, and Courtney Strauss won, 6-2, 6-3, 6-3, in singles for Corona del Mar at Fountain Valley. Kristen Pollock and Jacki O’Leary, won, 6-1, 6-2, 6-1, and Risa Hoffman and Michelle McFarland won, 7-6, 6-3, 6-0, in doubles for Corona del Mar.

Orange 13, Garden Grove 5--Lenka Hoborka won in singles, 6-0, 6-1, 6-1, for host Orange (4-0).

In nonleague volleyball:

Canyon 3, Estancia 0--Dawn Austin had 11 kills and seven blocks and Kori Dalbey had six aces in Canyon’s 15-12, 15-5, 15-10 victory at home. Canyon is 1-1.

Magnolia 3, Rancho Alamitos 0--Jill Schneider had 12 kills in 14 attempts, and Jessica Abrams had six aces and four kills for host Magnolia.

Newport Harbor 3, Marina 0--Maureen McLaren had 16 kills and Tara Kroesch had 11 kills and three blocks to lead visiting Newport Harbor (2-0) to a 15-13, 15-13, 15-12 victory.

Orange Lutheran 3, Orange 1--Senior Jennifer Kurtz had 17 kills and eight blocks to lead Orange Lutheran (2-0), 16-14, 15-5, 11-15, 15-8. Becky Pearson had seven kills and 10 blocks for Orange Lutheran (1-1).

Capistrano Valley Christian 3, Santa Fe 0--Kathleen Buntz had five kills and Joyleen Lotero had six aces to lead Capistrano Valley Christian to a 15-6, 15-3, 15-0 victory at home.

Ocean View 3, Trabuco Hills 0--Seniors Christy Campbell and Karen Jacobson led host Ocean View (2-0) to a 15-5, 15-2, 15-6 victory.

In nonleague water polo:

Tustin 13, Cypress 1--Senior setter Jim Smith and senior driver Josh Routon scored three goals each to lead host Tustin (2-0).

In the Millikan water polo tournament:

Marina 9, Los Alamitos 5--Bob Haefner, Chuck Kenyon, Cliff Wagner, and Jason Cox had two each for host Marina (1-0).

In boys’ nonleague cross-country:

El Modena scored dual meet victories over St. Paul, Artesia and Gahr at Gahr High School. El Modena’s Mike Terry finished second overall with a time of 16 minutes 47 seconds. Brent Austin was third (17:18) and Jason Morton was fourth (17:28).

In girls’ nonleague cross-country:

El Modena’s Kristina Dahlberg finished fourth overall (21:01), Cara Brookhouse finished fifth (21:22) and Janelle Coxford finished sixth (21:37) to lead El Modena, which defeated Artesia and Gahr but lost to St. Paul.

Dan Niednagel of Dana Hills ran the three-mile course in 15 minutes and 42 seconds to win the boys’ division of a meet at Dana Hills also involving Tustin and Canyon.

Natalie Driessen of Dana Hills won the three-mile girls’ race in 20:02.
