Alemany High kicker Greg Benitez, who earlier booted a 25-yard field goal, missed from 24 yards with 10 seconds left as Saugus escaped with a 12-10 victory Friday night in a nonleague game at College of the Canyons.

Saugus (2-0) went ahead, 12-10, with 2:36 left when quarterback Jeff Hickmann connected with Gerry Caruthers for a 14-yard touchdown. Saugus Coach Dick Flaherty elected to go for the two-point conversion, but running back Made Wenton was stopped at the goal line.

Alemany quarterback Joey Rosselli completed 24 of 31 passes for 247 yards and engineered a final drive of 75 yards before Benitez’s kick sailed wide.

Alemany (0-2) led, 10-0, at halftime but Saugus cut the lead to four in the third quarter when lineman John Lopata stripped Mark Dannemiller of the ball and returned it 29 yards for a touchdown.

Saugus gained only 71 yards in total offense but that sufficed. For Alemany, Bill Markowitz had 10 receptions for 133 yards and Terry Barnum gained 30 yards in 14 carries.
