THE SIDELINES : Mullin Ordered to Pay $3.9 Million
A jury has ordered Golden State Warriors forward Chris Mullin to pay $3.9 million to a man hit by the basketball player’s car in 1985.
Fulgencio Tirado, 38, was awarded $6.5 million in damages Monday in Supreme Court. Willets Point Contracting Corp., which was resurfacing the street, must pay the remaining $2.6 million.
Mullin’s car came to a construction area, went over a foot-high wooden barrier in the middle of the street, slid nearly 50 feet and struck Tirado as he stood with his bicycle on the median, lawyers said. Tirado lost a toe and suffered muscle damage to his right leg that required several operations.
The accident occurred 18 months before Mullin checked into an alcohol rehabilitation center. He was never given a blood-alcohol test in the accident and no charges were filed.
