Tennis Roundup : Lendl Advances to Semifinals
Top-seeded Ivan Lendl defeated Marcelo Filippini of Uruguay, 6-4, 7-6, Friday to advance to the semifinals of a $500,000 tennis tournament at Barcelona, Spain.
Third-seeded Alberto Mancini of Argentina beat fifth-seeded Carl-Uwe Steeb of West Germany, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (12-10), and Andres Gomez of Ecuador eliminated fourth-seeded Martin Jaite of Argentina, 6-7, 6-4, 6-3.
The final quarterfinal match between Austrians Horst Skoff and Thomas Muster, seeded No. 2, was postponed because of heavy rain with Skoff leading, 4-3, in the first set. They’ll finish this morning.
Manuela Maleeva’s persistence paid off as she worked 2 hours 15 minutes to gain the semifinals of a $250,000 tournanent in Dallas.
Maleeva of Bulgaria, seeded No. 3, advanced with a 6-1, 6-7 (11-9), 6-3 win over Italy’s Raffaella Reggi. In another quarterfinal match, Anne Smith, ranked 62nd in the world, upset eighth-seeded Rosalyn Fairbank of South Africa, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5).
