Southwest Roundup : Ware’s 6 Touchdown Passes Lead Houston

Andre Ware threw six touchdowns passes, four to Manny Hazard, and set the Southwest Conference record for scoring passes as 12th-ranked Houston crushed Baylor, 66-10, Saturday at Houston.

Ware’s completions of eight, 15, 46 and 41 yards to Hazard, 15 yards to Brian Williams and 20 yards to Chuck Weatherspoon, gave him 49 career touchdown passes.

Houston improved to 4-0, Baylor fell to 2-3.

Hazard caught his fifth scoring pass, with 1:42 left in the game, from backup quarterback David Klingler to set an SWC record for most touchdown receptions in a game.

Hazard broke the record of four held by three other receivers.

Ware’s touchdown passes broke the record of 48 held by Texas A&M;’s Kevin Murray. Ware, who left the game with 4:05 to play in the third quarter, had 33 completions in 53 attempts for 514 yards and one interception.

It was Ware’s second 500-yard game of the season, and it came against Baylor’s No. 1 nationally ranked pass defense. Baylor opponents had averaged only 65.1 passing yards in four previous games.

Ware sparked a 33-point second quarter that included 23 points in the final 3:51. The Cougars led, 36-0, at halftime.

Roman Anderson kicked field goals of 47, 46 and 51 yards, and Weatherspoon’s two-yard touchdown run gave the Cougars a 16-0 lead.

Anderson’s 51-yarder was the longest field goal of his career and came with 3:51 to play in the half. Anderson also kicked a 36-yarder in the third quarter.

Arkansas 41, Texas Christian 19--Fullbacks Barry Foster and JuJu Harshaw each scored two touchdowns and rushed for career highs as the seventh-ranked Razorbacks blew out the Horned Frogs at Ft. Worth.

Defending SWC champion Arkansas increased its record to 4-0 and 1-0 in the conference. TCU is 2-3 and 1-2.

Foster rushed 17 times for 176 yards and scored on runs of one and 10 yards. His previous best was 103 yards against Miami last year.

Harshaw rushed 16 times for 110 yards and scored on runs of one and 22 yards. His previous best was 105 yards last year against Baylor.

Arkansas scored three touchdowns in the second half after TCU’s Kevin Cordesman tied the score, 13-13, late in the third period. The Hogs rushed for 444 yards in 63 carries.

Todd Wright’s 40-yard field goal just before the first period ended set an NCAA record.

It was Arkansas’ 31st consecutive field goal, which broke Washington’s record of 30 set by Chuck Nelson in 1981-82. Kendall Trainor had 23 of the Arkansas field goals.

Texas 31, Rice 30--Quarterback Peter Gardere, a redshirt freshman starting his first game, scored on a four-yard dive with 4:05 left to lift the Longhorns past the Owls at Austin, Tex.

It appeared that Rice was en route to its first victory over Texas since 1965 before Gardere stretched the ball across the goal line for the winning score on a fourth-and-goal play. Wayne Clements’ extra point gave the Longhorns their 24th consecutive victory over the Owls.

Texas improved to 2-0 in the conference, 2-2 overall. Rice is 1-1, 1-3-1.
