Martin Scorsese’s “Raging Bull” was voted the best film of the decade and Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep were selected best actor and best actress in a critics’ poll published in the November issue of American Film magazine. The poll of 54 critics also named Scorsese the decade’s best director, with Woody Allen finishing second and Steven Spielberg third. Allen was chosen as best screenwriter, and his script for “Hannah and Her Sisters” was the top vote-getter among screenplays. The 10 best films of the ‘80s were listed as: “Raging Bull,” “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial,” “Blue Velvet,” “Hannah and Her Sisters,” “Atlantic City,” “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” “Platoon,” “Once Upon a Time in America,” “Prizzi’s Honor” and “The King of Comedy.” Nicholson’s competition for best actor were Robert DeNiro, Dustin Hoffman and William Hurt. Competing with Streep were Glenn Close and Kathleen Turner. “Ran” was picked as best foreign film and “The Thin Blue Line” best documentary.
