FALL SPORTS ROUNDUP : Chatsworth Girls Beat Cleveland Soundly

Share

The Chatsworth High girls’ volleyball players blamed lack of communication for their slow start against Cleveland on Wednesday in a Northwest Valley Conference match at home.

“We play better when we talk to each other,” said middle blocker Lori Mertes, who had a game-high 12 kills in the Chancellors’ 15-12, 15-11, 15-4 victory, their seventh win in a row. “At the start of the first two games, we didn’t talk. (Communicating) raised our spirit.”

Chatsworth (9-1 overall, 6-0 in league play) fell behind, 8-1, in the first game and, 10-1, in the second.

The Chancellors scored the last seven points of the first game and the last eight of the second, including seven service aces by Heather Gorman.

Chatsworth Coach Steve Berk attributed the comeback to the leadership of captain Kris Bassler.

“It’s really easy to get down after falling so far behind, but Kris doesn’t let that happen,” Berk said.

Bassler had 30 assists for Chatsworth and middle blocker Marie Mariano recorded nine kills. For Cleveland (7-3, 3-3), freshman Michele Diana had seven kills and Jennifer Williams and Monica Martin each added six.
