WESTERN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE ROUNDUP : Detmer Passes for 426 Yards, 3 Scores as BYU Wins, 49-24

Ty Detmer passed for 426 yards and three touchdowns to lead No. 21 Brigham Young to a 49-24 Western Athletic Conference victory over Texas El Paso Saturday at Provo, Utah.

Detmer completed 22 of 28 passes for the Cougars, 6-1 overall and 4-0 in WAC play. Two of his passes were intercepted, and he scored on a nine-yard run. UTEP is 1-3 and 2-6.

BYU built a 35-10 first-half lead.

Brigham Young led 21-3 late in the second quarter when linebacker Bob Davis intercepted a Howard Gasser pass and returned it 31 yards for a touchdown with 6:35 remaining.

Seventeen seconds later, strong safety Norm Dixon intercepted Gasser again and returned the ball 24 yards for a score.

Colorado State 31, Hawaii 16--Tony Alford’s 80-yard touchdown run in the third quarter pulled the Rams out of a first-half deficit and sent them on to a WAC victory at Fort Collins, Colo.

Colorado State is 3-4-1 and 2-2; Hawaii is 5-2 and 3-2.

San Diego State 35, Pacific 7--Junior wide receiver Jimmy Raye caught two touchdown passes from quarterback Dan McGwire, who completed 18 of 28 passes for 227 yards at San Diego.

Senior running back Ron Slack scored three touchdowns and gained 81 yards in 20 carries. Pacific is 1-7; SDSU is 3-3-1.
