SANTA ANA : 6 in Lot Wounded in Gang Shooting

Six men were wounded in what police suspect was a gang-related drive-by shooting early Sunday morning in Santa Ana.

Neighbors said they heard shots and screaming coming from a vacant lot on the corner of 2nd and Daisy streets about 12:30 a.m.

“I was asleep and woke up when I heard loud talking,” said John Huges, whose home is next door to the lot. “I told myself I wasn’t going to let the noise bother me this time, but then I heard shots and someone yell, ‘I am hit, I am hit!’ so I got up and ran toward the window and saw about six guys lying on the ground with gunshots in them.”

Santa Ana police were unable to identify the victims or describe their wounds but did say that the victims were not seriously injured and that the shooting appears to be related to gangs.

Saturday night before the shooting, a group of young men began to drink beer in the lot, residents said.

“When I first saw the guys out there, I knew it would be trouble,” said Paul Chairez, who lives across the street from the lot. “I immediately called the police to tell them about it but got no response.”

Chairez added that the police had been called several times in the last few weeks concerning large groups of men gathering in the lot.
