TENNIS ROUNDUP : McEnroe Beats Svensson
John McEnroe struggled to a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Jonas Svensson of Sweden in the opening round of the $1.3-million Paris Open Wednesday.
The third-seeded McEnroe played erratically, struggling with his serve after rolling to a 5-1 lead in the opening set. He had four aces but also served five double faults.
In other matches, Aaron Krickstein outlasted Ronald Agenor of Haiti, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, and Alberto Mancini of Argentina eliminated Mats Wilander of Sweden, 7-6 (10-8), 6-4.
Unseeded Eva Pfaff of West Germany upset fourth-seeded Natalia Zvereva of the Soviet Union, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4, in a tournament at Worcester, Mass.
In other action, Pam Shriver defeated Florencia Labat of Argentina, 6-3, 6-0, and second-seeded Gabriela Sabatini beat Gretchen Magers, 6-2, 6-2.
