John McEnroe let his temper get to him, but it was his sharp volleys that got to Horst Skoff of Austria Thursday at the Paris Open tennis tournament.

McEnroe defeated Skoff, 7-6 (7-3), 6-0, to advance to the quarterfinals Friday against Michael Chang.

But McEnroe’s victory wasn’t flawless. He wasted two set points in the 10th game of the first set. McEnroe slammed his racket on the court, which drew a warning.

Then, in the 12th game of the first set, McEnroe lost his temper after Richard Ings, the chair umpire, overruled a linesman on a Skoff serve, making it 15-0.

The penalty point made it 30-0, and McEnroe lost the game and went into the tiebreaker.

McEnroe followed his serve with crisp volleys and delicate placements as Skoff scored 10 points in the second set.

Boris Becker, the top-seeded player, double-faulted a match point away before finally edging Frenchman Guy Forget, 6-7 (4-7) 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) in a second-round match that lasted almost 3 1/2 hours.

Australian Wally Masur beat seventh-seeded Alberto Mancini of Argentina, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0. Masur meets Becker in the quarterfinals.

Brad Gilbert defeated local favorite Yannick Noah, 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-5).

Masur defeated Becker at the Australian Open in 1987.

McEnroe said he expects a good match from Chang, who won the French Open in June.

“If I play well I should win,” McEnroe said. “But he’s really come on a lot in the past year. He won a tournament that was one of the biggest surprises in the last 10 or 20 years. There’s no pressure on him because he’s young.”

Chang, who lost to McEnroe at the 1988 French Open, said: “I know he thinks I don’t respect him because he thinks I am still a kid. But I have matured a lot.”

“Last year, I remember going out there at Roland Garros and I felt like I was carrying his rackets,” Chang said. “Things are different now.”

Top-seeded Martina Navratilova beat unseeded Andrea Leand, 6-2, 6-2, to advance to the quarterfinals of the $300,000 Virginia Slims of New England tournament at Worcester, Mass.

Unseeded Ann Smith of Dallas upset seventh-seeded Helen Kelesi of Canada, 6-4, 6-2, to advance.
