NHL ROUNDUP : It Isn’t a Great Start for Carson

Share

It was not an auspicious debut for Jimmy Carson in Detroit.

The former Kings’ star, who quit the Edmonton Oilers and was obtained by the Detroit Red Wings Thursday in a multiplayer deal, arrived in time for Friday night’s game against the Hartford Whalers.

Carson, who went to the Oilers in the Wayne Gretzky trade, didn’t just fail to score. To the dismay of a capacity crowd of 19,875 at the Joe Louis Arena, Carson missed a penalty shot that might have made a difference in the Red Wings’ 4-3 defeat.

Dave Babych pulled Carson down from behind on a breakaway at 2:09 of the second period. Carson skated in and tried to fake Mike Liut, but the veteran goaltender stopped Carson’s backhand shot.

The Red Wings battled back after Hartford took a 2-0 lead in the first period. They tied the score, 3-3, on Bernie Federko’s third goal early in the final period.

With time running out, Ray Ferraro, going after his own rebound, bowled over Detroit goaltender Glen Hanlon to score the game-winner. It came with just 96 seconds remaining in regulation.

“I was nervous going out on the ice,” Carson said. “It was even worse after the penalty shot. But, I’m happy to be here.”

Washington 2, Toronto 1--Don Beaupre played in only 11 games for the Capitals last season, but he persuaded Coach Bryan Murray that he thrived on work.

In this game at Landover, Md., Beaupre played in his 12th game this season. It was the fourth in a row in which the Capitals held the opposition to one goal. In the other three, they lost two and tied one.

“When you’re playing a lot, you don’t worry about giving up an easy goal,” Beaupre said. “I had winning support. I don’t think the Leafs had a rebound shot all night.”

Yvon Corriveau broke a 1-1 tie at 4:09 of the second period and Beaupre, who stopped 28 shots, did the rest. It ended a seven-game winless streak.

Edmonton 5, Calgary 2--Mark Messier assisted on two goals in the first period at Edmonton, then scored his 11th in the second period to lead the Oilers.

The Oilers, who moved to within four points of the first-place Flames in the Smythe Division, took a 3-1 lead in the first period, then increased it with two goals in the second.

Grant Fuhr, in his third start of the season, stopped 32 shots and earned his first victory.

Petr Klima, obtained from Detroit in the Jimmy Carson trade, had two assists for the Oilers. He played on a line with Messier and Glen Anderson.

Winnipeg 3, Vancouver 2--The Canucks, who played impressively on a recent trip, were no match at home against the Jets and missed a chance to move to within a point of first place in the Smythe Division.

Dave McLlwain, Paul Fenton and Doug Smail had goals for the Jets in a two-minute burst in the first period to provide all the scoring.

Tony Tanti and Igor Larionov scored to make it close for the Canucks, whose three-game unbeaten streak ended.
